A Grease Seal, also known as a Grease Lubricated Seal, is designed to retain lubricating grease around bearings and rotating components while helping prevent dust, dirt, water and road contaminants from entering the assembly.
Compared with sealing systems mainly designed for flowing lubricating oil, grease seal applications require particular attention to bearing lubrication, sealing lip contact, shaft speed, temperature and contamination conditions.

The main purpose of a Grease Seal is to maintain the correct lubrication environment around bearings and rotating components.
A properly selected seal performs several functions:

Depending on the application, a Grease Seal may include:

The exact design should be selected according to the lubrication system and operating environment rather than using one grease seal structure for every application.
Grease Seal and Oil Seal are both commonly used around rotating shafts, but the lubricant being retained changes the sealing requirements.

Because grease is thicker than oil, it can be easier to retain. However, this does not mean that any standard oil seal can automatically be used as a grease seal.
Seal lip design, lubrication conditions, rotational speed, temperature and relubrication requirements should still be evaluated.
A Grease Seal should be considered when the rotating assembly primarily relies on grease lubrication rather than circulating or splash oil lubrication.

For heavy-duty wheel ends exposed to mud, water and road debris, a more protective multi-lip, cassette or combined seal structure may be required instead of a simple single-lip grease seal.
Wheel hubs are one of the most important applications for Grease Seals.
Truck and trailer wheel bearings operate under continuous rotation, vehicle load, vibration and changing road conditions. A wheel hub grease seal therefore needs to retain bearing grease while protecting the bearing system from external contaminants.
When selecting a Wheel Hub Grease Seal, consider:

● OE seal number
● Rotational speed
● Operating temperature
● Road contamination conditions

● Maintenance or relubrication interval
For replacement applications, confirming the OE number and original seal structure is especially important.
A conventional Grease Seal may be sufficient for relatively controlled bearing environments.
However, heavy-duty trucks, tractors and off-road machinery frequently operate around water, mud, abrasive dust and other contaminants.
In these conditions, a cassette or combined sealing structure can provide additional protection by integrating multiple sealing lips, running surfaces or protective components into one assembly.
Consider a more protective structure when:
● The equipment operates in severe dust or mud.
● Wheel hubs are frequently exposed to water.
● Shaft surface wear is a concern.
● Multiple contamination barriers are required.
● The original equipment uses a cassette-type seal.
The most complex seal is not always the best choice. The correct design should match the actual contamination level, housing and rotating interface.

For replacement seals, photos of both sides of the original product can also help identify its lip and case structure.
The elastomer material should match the temperature, grease chemistry and operating environment.
NBR is widely used in general grease and oil sealing applications because of its practical balance of oil resistance, flexibility and cost.
FKM can be considered where higher temperatures or more demanding lubricant and chemical conditions are involved.
Material selection should not be based only on the seal dimensions. Always consider the actual operating temperature and grease used in the equipment.
Grease Seal performance depends on more than the seal itself.
