Axle Seal vs Wheel Hub Seal: Are They the Same?

 

The terms are sometimes used interchangeably in the replacement-parts market, but they do not always describe exactly the same component.

An axle shaft oil seal generally seals around a rotating axle shaft and helps prevent differential or axle lubricant from escaping.

A wheel hub oil seal is located closer to the wheel-end assembly and is primarily responsible for retaining oil or grease around wheel bearings while helping block dust, water and road debris.

In some heavy-duty axle systems, the wheel-end sealing component may use a more complex cassette or combined structure rather than a conventional radial oil seal.
