How Does Oil Seal Structure Affect Performance?

 

The structure of an oil seal determines how the sealing lip contacts the rotating surface, how the seal fits into the housing and how effectively it separates lubricant from external contaminants.

A typical rotary oil seal may include a rubber sealing element, supporting case and, depending on the design, a spring that maintains contact between the sealing lip and shaft.

Additional lips, integrated sleeves or combined structures can provide extra protection where the application is exposed to dust, mud, water or other contamination.

For this reason, two rubber oil seals with the same inner and outer diameter are not necessarily interchangeable.

 

When comparing seal structures, consider four functions:

 

Lubricant retention
Determine whether the system uses oil or grease and what fluid needs to remain inside the assembly.

 

Contaminant exclusion
Applications exposed to road debris, dust, mud or water may require an additional dust lip or a more protective seal structure.

 

Rotating interface
Confirm which component rotates and where the main sealing lip contacts the shaft or sleeve.

 

Installation design
Housing geometry, shaft dimensions and available installation space influence whether a conventional, flanged, combined or cassette-type structure is appropriate.

TC, TB, SC, SB and Other Oil Seal Codes

 

TC, SC, TG, SG, TB, SB, TA and SA are commonly used design references for radial oil seal structures.

However, a structure code should not be treated as the only identification criterion when purchasing a replacement seal.

For accurate matching, also confirm:

ID × OD × Width

as well as:

lip configuration + outer case design + material + spring configuration + application

If you are replacing an existing seal, sending a photo of both sides of the product together with its dimensions can make structure identification easier.

Oil Seal Material Matters as Much as Structure

 

Seal structure determines the mechanical configuration, while the rubber compound affects compatibility with temperature, lubricant, chemicals and operating conditions.

TBT's current product range includes seals specified with materials such as NBR and FKM.

 

NBR

NBR is widely used for general oil and grease sealing applications because of its balance of oil resistance, elasticity and cost.

 

FKM

FKM is commonly considered for applications requiring greater resistance to heat, oils or aggressive operating environments.

Material selection should not be based only on the name of the vehicle or machine. Buyers should consider the actual lubricant, temperature, shaft speed and surrounding environment.

When replacing an OE seal, matching or validating the original material specification is recommended.

 

Match Seal Structure with the Application

 

The same sealing structure can be used across different vehicle and machinery systems.

How to Identify an Unknown Rubber Oil Seal

 

When the original part number is missing, seal identification should be based on more than appearance.

Provide as much of the following information as possible:

Standard or Custom Rubber Seals?

 

A standard oil seal is usually preferable when an existing structure and dimension already meet the application requirements.

A custom rubber seal may need to be evaluated when:

  • Standard dimensions do not fit the shaft or housing
  • The original structure is discontinued or difficult to source
  • The application requires a different lip configuration
  • Material requirements differ from the standard product
  • Additional dust or contamination protection is required
  • A drawing or existing sample must be reproduced

For custom requirements, provide the drawing, sample, dimensions, material requirement and actual working conditions.
